We're off to WhereCamp!

wherecamp_logo_small

We’re headed down to Google HQ for WhereCamp SF 2010 this weekend. For those who haven’t heard of WhereCamp, it’s a conference where anyone is welcomed to discuss location, maps, augmented reality, open location standards, and much more!

This is our third year, and we’re very excited for the chance to spend two days geeking out on geo-related topics. If you’re headed down to Mountain View, come over and say “Hello”!

RunThere is becoming FriendFit!

As a RunThere user, you’ve probably seen a few hints of our re-branding process. Over the past year, we kept hearing over and over again that you wanted to share more types of fitness activities. In the next week or two, RunThere.com will transition to FriendFit.com! Don’t worry, you won’t need to create a new account, change your embedded routes, and your data is safe. Any links to the old domain name will just point to the new site.

Why the name change?

RunThere was created originally to measure running routes. Soon after, we added biking to the mix, and it became clear that other sports would follow. RunThere is now a place to share all your fitness activities, and the service has outgrown its name.

When we introduce ourselves to potential users, sometimes they say, “Well, I don’t run, but I like to bike and swim”. With FriendFit, it’ll be easier to communicate that we’re not just for runners, but that any athlete at any fitness level is welcome!

The new name needed to reflect our vision of a fitness social network, where friends and family motivate each other to get healthy. We spent a few months brainstorming names, and last month we finally decided on the FriendFit.com name. It’s easy to spell, rolls off the tongue, and most importantly, it was available! So what do you think? Send us your feedback.

Account Access

When we’re ready to flip the switch, there’s no need to do anything. We’ll point you to the right location, and you can use your same username/password information to access your account.

Smile! Improved Fitness Blogs, now with photos…

We’ve just launched a couple of new Fitness Blog improvements. Now, you can upload photos to each activity post on RunThere! An image is worth a thousand words, so let’s see how this makes things better. As you’ll see, while you log a new activity, just click “Add a Photo”, choose an image to upload, and fill out the rest of form.

Photos are a great way to share your workouts. Inspire friends after a tough workout, track your weight-loss goals visually, or share a great view from your last bike ride, run or hike.

Try it now by logging a new activity! As always, we’d love to hear your feedback. More features to come, stay tuned!

New Fitness Blog Privacy controls

With this release, we also added a better way to manage your Fitness Blog privacy and sharing. You can now control who gets to see the routes you used on running, biking, and other outdoor activities separately from who gets to the rest of your information. For example, if you can set your posts to be fully public, while only letting your approved RunThere friends see which route(s) you’re running.

Find these new settings by visiting your own Fitness Blog and look for the “Sharing & Privacy” button.

Other changes

  • New 25-yard swimming pool, for our U.S. users
  • A few bugfixes for group events and route searches, and new posts from a route.
  • Cleaned up the Fitness Blog layout

Big Sur Marathon, scenic California coastline

Big SurThe Big Sur Marathon is 26.2 miles of the most beautiful coastline in the world – and, for runners, the most challenging. It was established in 1986 and attracts about 4,500 participants annually. This year, the event will be held on April 25th, 2010. The athletes who participate in the Big Sur International Marathon draw inspiration from the spectacular views, but it takes major discipline to conquer the hills of Highway One on the way to the finish line.

Named “Best Marathon in North America” by The Ultimate Guide to Marathons, the Big Sur International Marathon continues to sell out earlier and earlier each year and, as a major destination marathon, draws entrants from all over the world. On their way from Big Sur to Carmel’s Rio Road, runners wind through majestic redwoods and past Pacific Ocean views.

Related marathon-day events include a 21-mile power walk, 5K run, 9-mile walk, 10.6-mile walk, and marathon relay. An expansive sports expo takes place for the two days before the run at the Monterey Conference Center. Each year, the non-profit marathon board of directors donates over $150,000 to local charities. For more information, please visit the Big Sur International Marathon website.
